Description
The newly developed wave power generator (Wave Rudder) has been installed at Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture for field demonstration. The wave power generator is a pendulum type convertor (classified as a oscillating wave surge converter by EMEC) and uses commercially available hydraulic ship steering equipment, permanent magnet synchronous generator, and power conditioner to produce a low cost and high durability system. Measurements of generator output made by varying generator torque under high wave conditions shown that a generation efficiency of 32% can be achieved with optimal setting of generator load. The Kuji Wave Power Plant has met requirements including safety, grid connection and pre-operation inspections by the government and local utility company; compliance with regulatory and utility company requirements is an important factor for future deployment.
