Abstract
Laboratory experiments were conducted in an oscillatory flow tunnel focusing on the mechanism of the void development in seawalls. Rates of sand leaking from a sand-packed container through a small opening gap were measured under oscillatory pressure and velocities. The sand leaking rate was found to be proportional to the pressure amplitude and to the volume of the void in the container, which appeared to explain the acceleration mechanism of the void development frequently observed under high waves. Effective countermeasure to decelerate the void development was found to fill the void with incompressible materials in early stage of the void development.
