説明

An expressivist theory of language asserts that thought is necessarily embodied in a linguistic medium and language is embodied in a shared form of life. In this paper I want to defend this expressivist theory and to assert that this theory is closely connected with a truth condition theory of meaning.
But M. Dummett attacks the truth condition theory of meaning. One of his reasons is (1) that the truth condition theory is a modest theory of meaning (which gives the interpretation of the language to someone who already has the concepts required) and that the modest theory is mistaken as a theory of meaning. Another reason is (2) that although the truth condition theory of meaning presupposes a realism, it is not possible to maintain the realism.
This paper defends the truth condition theory of meaning and the expressivist theory of language.
