Description

A 15-year-old intact female Beagle dog was brought to the hospital for a follow-up of previously treated skin squamous cell carcinoma. Presence of fasting hypoglycemia has led to a diagnosis of with islet beta cell carcinoma, which later was treated with partial pancreatectomy and diagnosed histopathologically. Preoperative assessment of the patient also revealed a mass of 1.8 x 1.8 cm at the right lobe of the thyroid and a small mass at the lesser curvature of the gastric pylorus. The former was cytologically confirmed as a thyroid tumor, and the gastric mass was histopathologically diagnosed as lymphoma of the stomach. Hyperinsulinemia and hypoglycemia persisted after the surgery, and the condition was controlled with dietary and prednisolone therapies. The gastrointestinal lymphoma was treated with doxorubicin with a complete remission achieved. The thyroid tumor was untreated and there were no signs of progression. The patient was in an excellent quality of life (QOL) for the 9 months before death with pulmonary edema associated with a cardiac failure.
