Description
In this pioneering study, persistence and change of the“Ie"system are clarified using examples of grandparents responsible for raising grandchildren. Three periods of family development are incorporated. The core of this paper is the family reconstruction period.
During the family membersʼreduction period,(1)when first-born sons got married at early-life-stage,the parent generation (grandparents)definitely did not want to live with them.
During the family reconstruction period, (2)basis of the “Ie"system in the Meijicivil-law era is eliminated from child custody issues. (3)Grandmothersʼaffection for boys (son, grandson)is consistent with their attitude toward heirs. However, grandfathers cherish girls(daughter, granddaughter),while they see boys as their heirs. The stem-family-type vertical lineof father-to-son succession is still strongly rooted among grandparents raising their grandchildren. The relationship of the grandmother and the first-born son, and the grandmother and the grandson are the core of this line and strengthened the inherence. (4)According to the data of persistence and change of the “Ie"system, the paternal grandmothers who bear responsibility of raising their grandson and granddaughter tend to stick to the persistence of the paternal blood.
During the next family membersʼreduction period,(5)there is a trend in marriage for those who were born in the 1960s,they tended to form nuclear families when they got married, and gradually start living together with the husbandʼs parents. The main reason for this is the succession of the husbandʼs lineage and the ownership of the house. These traditional factors are confirmed through this data. In addition, this case reveals that the grandparents have gradually developed their attitudes toward the heir since their first-born son lived nearby due to the sonʼs career change.
