Some investigations have been made to determine how the air-drying conditions and adhesive states of Bordeaux mixture on tomatoes influence the removability of the pesticide residue by washing with the detergent containing sugar fatty acid ester and potassium pyrophosphate.
For the removal of the pesticide residue from tomatoes, the use of spreading and wetting agent in the pesticide spray and the presence of hair on surface of tomato were found to act as advantageous factors owing to the uniform adhesion of the pesticide on tomatoes. On the other hand, the lapse of time and sunlight radiation after the pesticide spray were found to act as disadvantageous factors owing to the strong adhesion of the pesticide on tomatoes. Furthermore, the detergency for the pesticide residue was shown to be highly dependent on the composition of the pesticide.
However, the removability of the pesticide residue was relatively high in spite of severe difficult-toremove conditions including use of 4-8 type of Bordeaux mixture and adhesion of 20ppm as cupric ions. From these results and the measurement of cupric ions in unwashed tomatoes in several canners, some directions for use of the detergent reported in previous papers seem to be sufficient for removal of the pesticide from usual tomatoes.
