Six sorts of the wood chips, namely the heart and splint wood of the lower part of a trunk of the 60 year Todomatsu tree and splint wood of the middle part of the same and further the ethyl alcohol extracted of these above mentioned, were subjected under the normal sulphite cooking independently or in the existence of two different wood chip in the same digester.<BR>As the results of the experiments, the followings were observed : <BR>1.These were no difficulty as to the sulphite cooking of all the wood chips employed, so that all of the samples were digested to the ordinary pulps.<BR>2.81-91 per cent by weight of the resin contained in the unextracted wood chips was removed during the cookng and washing followed, but these figures were decreased to 71-81 per cent by the extracted. From these it seemed that the resin which remained in the extracted wood chips were not easier to remove than that of the unextracted.<BR>3. In the case of simultaneous cooking of two different wood chips in the same digester, that is to say, the one wood chips were extracted with ethyl alcohol and the other were not, the resin isolated from the former was not likely to deposit on the pulp which came from the later.<BR>4.As the result of the cooking of the ethyl alcohol extracted wood chips neither the formation nor the increase of the resin observed.<BR>5. On account of cooking action, the quantities of the fatty acid increase evidently.
