説明

In the present study, the manner in which trace amount of phenol and anionic surfactants (Sodium dodecyl sulfate : SDS) are adsorbed by carbon adsorbents under competitive conditions in aqueous solution is described.<BR>Pittsburgh activated carbon (Calgon Co.) and Electronic conductive carbon black (Lion Akzo Co.) were used as carbon adsorbents. Adsorption isotherms on carbon adsorbents were all of the Freund-lick-type. The total amount of the activated carbon adsorbed in the multisolute system decreased linearly with increasing molar fraction of SDS at the initial concentration. Thus, the total amount adsorbed in the multisolute system can be estimated by Freundlich constants determined from single-solute equilibrium adsorptions and molar fractions of adsorbates at the initial concentration. The adsorbed amount of phenol for the carbon black increased with the molar fraction of phenol at the initial concentration. But the amount of adsorbed SDS for the carbon black also increased with the molar fraction of phenol. That is, the adsorption characteristics of SDS are peculiar to carbon black. These characteristics of SDS are closedly related to the molecular size of SDS and to the pore structure of carbon black with mesopores.
