Abstract

The wettability of 6-nylon was investigated by the capillary rise and streaming potential methods as a function of pH in the absence and presence of surfactants. In the absence of surfactants, the contact angle was maximum near the iso-electric point of the nylon, due to a force balance at the air-liquid-nylon boundary. In the presence of surfactants, specific adsorption of surfactant ions on the surface of the nylon occurred even when the surface had the same sign of charge, thus causing the contact angle to decrease. This decrease was closely related to the free energy of adsorption of the surfactants onto the nylon surface. This free energy was greater in the case of cationic than anionic surfactants at the iso-electric point of the nylon.
