Description

The report estimates the thickness of the buffer material utilized in the geologic disposal. The overall safety report on the geologic disposal in Japan showed the thickness is 0.7m because of the buffering capability of mechanical stress arising due to volume expansion during the corrosion of the 0.19m thick overpack. The overpack thickness was possibly reduced to 0.11m according to our previous study and this reduction lowers the necessary thickness of the buffer material as 0.5m. Even though the reduction was encountered, the mechanical stability of overpack was maintained. Series of the design study of the engineered barrier components had been carried out so far. As results the longer corrosion life of the vitrified waste and thinner overpack and buffer material had been informed. No drastic increase of the nuclide release rates out of the engineered barrier for some important nuclides was observed by nuclide migration analysis even when the re-estimated settings were assumed.
