Abstract

The Chinese Society for Women’s Studies (CSWS), a non-profit organization, has been actively involved in the development of gender/women’s studies in China since 1989. Drawing its core members from women scholars in the Chinese diaspora, CSWS has pooled its academic resources to introduce gender theories and feminist practice as well as feminist critics to development projects for women in the PRC. With financial support from major foundations, such as the Ford Foundation and Luce Foundation, CSWS successfully assisted feminist scholars and activists from the mainland and the diaspora to communicate and learn from each other. This article reviews the development of CSWS, understanding its experience in the framework of transnational feminist theory. The article explores, first, how a national concern has a global and transnational nature. Second, for Chinese feminists in the diaspora and in the homeland, how the cross-boundary experience became part of their self-identity. Last but not least, how the CSWS experience can serve as an example of international collaboration in terms of social activities and social movements with both local benefits and global significance.
