The purpose of this study was to clarify the thought of “Amateurism” developed during the 1920s by Chiyosaburo Takeda (1867–1932). In particular, we focused on his activities as the principal of Osaka higher commercial school.
Our study focused on four points: 1) Clarifying Takeda’s awareness of the problems of college sports in the 1920s through the examination of “GAKUSEIUNDOTORISHIMARIRON”; 2) Clarifying Takeda’s ideal of Amateur rules through the examination of “UNDOKYOSHIKYOKAIKENSHORUISAN”; 3) Clarifying Takeda’s ideal of amateur athlete through the examination of the “Athletic Clubs Rules for Athlete Selection.” 4) Clarifying how students reacted to the “Athletic Clubs Rules for Athlete Selection.”
Our conclusions were as follows: Takeda asserted that sports have educational value, and that students should aim to succeed in both academics and sports activities. When students could not achieve the appropriate balance between the two, Takeda removed them from athletic clubs according to the “Athletic Clubs Rules for Athlete Selection.” Consequently, these rules were perceived negatively by students, who could not understand Takeda’s belief that sports have educational value. On the other hand, a student named Taniyama insisted on improving the “Athletic Clubs Rules for Athlete Selection” because he agreed with Takeda’s thoughts.
Our study revealed that Takeda removed students from athletic clubs at Osaka higher commercial school who could not balance both academics and sports. Therefore, our discussion suggests the necessity of reconsidering the person of Takeda, who is perceived as a representative advocate of the traditionally class-based discriminatory concept of “Amateurism.”
