Abstract

Cantonese auxiliary nouns (_??_) without any prefixed demonstratives can be placed before nouns and point out a referent as well as demonstratives. This use of auxiliary nouns (_??_) is one of the syntactical features of Cantonese grammar which do not apply to Mandarin Chinese.<BR>This paper is intended to show the basic uses of Cantonese auxiliary nouns (_??_) and demonstratives ‘_??_/_??_’ on a dialogue level.
