This paper analyzes the usage of modality in Taiwanese Hakka. Taiwanese Hakka speakers when asked for a hearers' opinion about an event or a thing, use modal verbs such as “yu” or “voi” to distinguish a judgment about a proposition. When a speaker makes judgments, they at the same time, show his or her mental conceptualization of the event or thing. The speakers' construal of an event or a thing is based on their conceptualization of “bounding” in contrast to the “unbounding” in their cognitive domain about the idealistic or realistic concepts of the event or thing.
