Abstract

This paper discusses the semantic structures of three types of onomatopoeia reduplication-AA, ABAB and AABB-by analysing their cognitive mechanisms. Three types of cognitive modes (rapid sequential scanning, sequential scanning and overlapping sequential scanning) are proposed for AA, ABAB and AABB respectively. By comparison, AA denotes faster scanning than ABAB. The difference between ABAB and AABB-a form unseen in other languages-is that the former denotes a process with intervals while the latter denotes one without intervals. We claim that the three cognitive modes are also adopted in reduplications of classifiers, verbs and adjectives.
