Abstract

Information of river channel morphology is the key data fundamental to tasks for river planning and management. Airborne Laser Bathymetry (ALB) using a green laser is an effective surveying technology for measuring the detailed planar river morphology including submerged river bed. For this study, we examined the accuracy of the ALB system within a 6 km-long section of the lower Asahi River, by comparing the ALB data of 2 m horizontal resolution with results of the conventional river surveying method. We also evaluated the effect of use of the high-resolution river morphology in river flow analysis. Resultantly, it was confirmed that the ALB system is able to reproduce the cross-sectional river bed profile at least with an accuracy of several tens of centimeters. Additionally, the results of flow analysis showed that the characteristic flow pattern was calculated reasonably using the ALB data, dependent on the river bed shape around sand bars found in the targeted river section.
