Abstract
In the asphalt pavement on steel deck bridges, various damages appear, which are much more serious than pavements on other structures. Causes of the damages are not clear, because the strain behaviors of the pavement are not well understood.<br> In this study, a viscoelastic FEM analysis was employed to clarify the strain behavior of the asphalt pavements. The FEM model used fine mesh layout to investigate the change of strain in the small area around wheel tires. In the analysis, high tensile strains were calculated close to wheel tires, which might cause the surface cracks. Furthermore, reduction of bonding stiffness between the pavement and the steel deck could enlarge the strains and create the slip failure at the bottom of the asphalt pavement.
