Abstract
Because strangers are sharing a closed space inside public transportation vehicles except taxis, what is called “in-vehicle atmosphere” is formed by passenger behaviors. The passengers evaluate the in-vehicle atmosphere in terms of their feeling, and good in-vehicle atmosphere can influence the passengers' emotional attachments and their feeling of security towards a certain public transportation mode.<br>This research is based on a hypothesis that “in-vehicle atmosphere are formed by passenger behaviors”. On-Site observations and questionnaire surveys are carried on in a community bus route in Musashino City. As the results of the analysis, 2 main points are indicated: 1) the more passengers noticing their behavior to the other passengers, the better in-vehicle atmosphere is formed; 2) the better atmosphere is formed, the more passengers showing emotional attachment and feeling of security towards the public transportation mode. We find that in order to form better in-vehicle atmosphere, efforts from both hard and soft sides are needed.
