Description

Airport capacity in Tokyo metropolitan area has been always insufficient, especially in HANEDA airport. In 2010, The runway capacity of Haneda have been expanded by 4th runway and it will have two set of open-parallel runways with crossing layout which makes the ATC operation more complex. Therefore the future additional runway (5th runway) to the current 4-runway system will not be easy to be developed and must need to use the lower altitude airspace over the inland Tokyo which have been basically unused due to the aircraft noise problem. This study analyze the possibility of the development the 5th runway in Haneda and assess the aircraft noise impact. The results shows that the runway capacity of Haneda can be increase to around 96 from current 80 movements per hour by 5th runway without significant aircraft noise impact and increased to around 110 movements by opening the airspace over Tokyo inland area.
