In some automobiles, air bag restraint systems do not operate when a driver stops the engine to perform ‘stop idling.’ For this reason, drivers are urged not to perform ‘stop idling’ when they are waiting for a signal immediately next to an intersection because of the danger of involvement in an intersection accident. Whether or not drivers perform ‘stop idling’ is each driver's decision. Therefore, evaluating the risk of crash accidents while waiting for a signal must be done correctly so that each driver can judge the costs and benefits of ‘stop idling’ appropriately. This study analyzes traffic accident data, which reveal that air bag restraint systems operated in 1.2% of crash accidents that occurred near intersections while a driver was waiting for a signal.
