Recently, roundabouts have been actively introduced in European countries and U.S.A as a form of grade intersection where traffic volume is relatively low. In Japan, studies have been conducted on the comparison of performance between roundabouts and signalized intersections, traffic management under the present legal structure and so on in preparation for the introduction of roundabouts. However, problems associated with the introduction of roundabouts in cold snowy regions, including Hokkaido, have not been fully discussed. In this study, a roundabout was installed on the Tomakomai Winter Test Track, where subjects participated in driving experiments in autumn and winter in order to gain understandings the changes in driving behavior and subjective assessments due to road surface conditions.<br>Based on the driving behavior data obtained from experiments in autumn and winter, it can be confirmed that travel speed decreased when entering and traveling on the circulating roadway covered with snow and ice in winter and that there were almost no differences in transverse acceleration between vehicles traveling in the roundabout and those turning right and left at the intersection. The results of subjective assessments of the roundabout showed that there is a possibility to improve assessments by road users with an accumulation of driving experience.<br>While these positive findings were obtained, problems associated with driving in winter when pavement markings were invisible were revealed; for example, drivers drove closer to the central island and subjective assessments in the winter experiment were not as good as those in the autumn experiment. On the basis of these findings, discussion was made on the necessity of measures to specify the appropriate path in the snow and ice covered road in an effort to introduce roundabouts in snowy, cold regions.
