Abstract

Thus far, both a process for developing and a method for validating a traffic simulator that calculates CO2 emission or vehicle speed and acceleration, which influences mainly the calculation of CO2 emission, have not been explored. As a result, the validity of estimation of CO2 emission using a traffic simulator is not sufficiently clear. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors that should be validated in order to preserve the reproducibility of CO2 emission, by comparing the detailed movements of vehicles and CO2 emissions obtained from three major microscopic traffic simulators that are run under the same input conditions and validated for aggregated levels of traffic conditions such as average speed. As a result, it is found that the reproducibility of vehicle behavior depends on the characteristics of the simulators. On the basis of these results, the points that should be considered in the model validation from the viewpoint of reproducibility of CO2 emission are discussed.
