Description

The present study was carried out to search for the optimum condition of preliminary treatment of Kovar (Fernico) in order to make good glass-to-metal seals. Especially, the effects of the hydrogen annealing on the characters of the oxide films were studied. The results obtained were as follows:
(1) The adherence between Kovar and its oxide films was affected by the conditions of the hydrogen annealing given before the oxidation. That is, the oxide films formed on too coarse structure alloy (due to high temperature hydrogen annealing) and on too fine structure alloy (due to lack of hydrogen annealing) showed weak adherence to base metals.
(2) The rate of the oxidation was affected by the grain size of Kovar. The larger the grain of Kovar was, the slower the rate of the oxidation became.
(3) The gain of weight (mg/cm2) by the oxidation and the conditions of the hydrogen annealing had an influence on the thermal shock resistivity of the seals.
(4) The oxidizing temperature affected the orientation of the Spinel type oxide to be formed on Kovar. But the hydrogen annealing temperature showed no clear effects on the crystal structure of the oxide.
(5) In giving explanation on the above phenomena, some problems on the sealability were discussed.
