Abstract Stress concentration and the form factor of a perforated strip under tension are examined by a theoretical calculation. The principal points of the method of calculation are that the strip is substituted by a semi-in- finite plate containing a circular hole, and the results of this substituted problem which has already been solved exactly by means of bi-polar coordinates are applied. of course the perforated strip and the semi-infinite plate are not the same, but the stress distributions in them are quite similar, so that the ratios of the maximum principal stress at the edge of the hole and the mean stress at the minimum cross section through the center of the hole, i.e. the form factors, are almost equal in these two plates. The values of the form factor thus calculated from the semi-infinite plate vary from 3 (the case of a infinitely small hole) to 2 (the case of a large hole having a diameter equal to the breadth of the strip). By this method we can calculate the form factor in a wide range of the ratio of the hole diameter to the breadth of the strip very easily and simply.
