Abstract

Analysing the various stress curves such as prin cipal stress trajectories, isoclinics and isochromatics which appear in a semi-infinite plate subjected to a pressure on a part of its edge, some simple geo metrical relations between Bipolar coordinates, Elliptic coordinates and Hyperbola-Cassini's Lernniscate coordinates are found. Though the pro blems dealt with in this paper are well known in the fields of photoelasticity and etc., it is the subject, matter to solve them simply by the, use of bipolar coordinates regarding their bipolar symmetry and also to make clear the relations between the various curvilinear coordinates in connection with applied mechanics.
