THE ACTION OF A 2-8-2 TYRE LOCOMOTIVE TRAVERSING A TURNOUT CURVE UPON THE RAIL

Abstract

The author has estimated the lateral forces imposed on the turnout curve by a 2-8-2 type locomotive and has measured the bending moments in the lead and the stock rails under the locomotive. These estimations and measurements show that<br>(a) the pony truck assumes the extreme position of its side play, <br>(b) the flanges of the leading wheel and the first driving wheel are in contact with the outer rail of the turnout curve and exert great lateral forces on the railhead, <br>(c) the vertical load of the leading wheelson the inner rail is reduced by the lateral force and the wheel runs the risk of derailment when it hits the guard rail of the turnout, <br>(d) the flange of the driving wheel near the centre of friction is in contact with the inner rail of the turnout curve, and the slack must be increased to decrease the lateral force, <br>(e) a large lateral force is imposed on the stock rail outside the point rail, when the locomotive leaves the turnout curve and runs against the stock rail, because of the incident angle of the point rail.
