Some flow characteristics of the channel with a distributary are investigated analytically and experimentally in this report.
To research flow characteristics mainly in the main channel, pattern of these flows are finally reduced by means of the overlap principle to the “symmetrical out-flow”, that is, the out-flow from an openning of a channel side-wall (an orifice of a tank with the finite width and infinite length) corresponding to the junction of a distributary. These flow patterns are fundamentally calculated by conformal representations and the critical condition of the occurrence of upstream-ward back-flow and the stagnation point near the downstream corner of the openning were determined by these analyses.
The occurrence of the super-critical region near the upstream corner of the openning which is similar to the transonic problem in the aerodynamics is also investigated by the above-mentioned method and these characteristics are verified by our experiments.
We found experimentally interesting relations between the distribution ratio of tractive sand loads and of water discharge. It was recognized that tractive loads flowing into a distributary were nearly provided only by the distribution ratio of discharge and scarely any other hydraulic quantities, and also that when about half part of total discharge (the distribution ratio: κ≅50%), almost all tractive loads flowed into a distributary (the distribution ratio of loads: εg≅100%). Our tentative experimental relations between κ and εg are as shown follows.
1-κg=4.510 (0.530-κ)2, κ>-0.11
Moreover, the situation and the type of jetties near the branching part are delibarated by our experiments and the detached type jetty with a submerged mole is proposed as the most suitable one.
In the last chapter of this report, our field and model studies for the improvement of the intake work of the hydraulic power station are briefly mentioned.
