Description
The step response for the discharge rate of powders as a function of scraper position is here studied in regard to the height (Y-curve) at which the scraper cuts the powder bed in a steady state. The response is a derivative mode when the gradient of the Y-curve is smaller than the angle of repose, while it shows a first-order delay when the gradient is larger than that angle. The Y-curve is also obtained analytically assuming that the energy required to spread out the powder bed by an infinitesimal distance is proportional to the spread out length raised to some power, and that the work done by one revolution of the table is constant. Since the Y-curve is hyperbolic in general, the response at large radius of the scraper position is usually derivative, and the region of derivative action becomes smaller with the increasing flowability of powder.
