Description

High sulfated slag cement, which is the mixture of granulated blast furnace slag and gypsum with a small amount of alkaline activator such as calcium hydroxide or portland cement, is very good material from the view point of energy and resource saving. It has recently been proposed to use new alkaline activators, such as tricalcium aluminate, haüyne or calcium hydroxide+aluminium sulfate, instead of portland cement. Authors studied the action of aluminium sulfate on the slag hydration. when it was used together with calcium hydroxide.
1. The activation effect on slag hydration was improved remarkably, and the optimum amount of alkaline activator became larger, when aluminium sulfate was added together with calcium hydroxide, And so aluminium sulfate was believed to spread the practical possibility of high sulfated slag cement.
2. Ettringite, formed from calcium hydroxide and aluminium sulfate, was supposed to show pH buffer action. The pH of liquid phase was kept about 12 which encourage the hydration of granulated blast furnance slag.
