Abstract

Studies that employ network perspectives to analyze the transition of young people from school to work have emphasized the idea that while networks provide support for young people, the closure of and restrictions on these networks also hinder them from being able to obtain employment. This functionalist explanation raises the question of how young people utilize and create networks under certain predetermined conditions.

This study investigated the above question from the perspective of non-elite youth by positioning young people as autonomous actors. Specifically, it focused on the running of an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) by a group of young entrepreneurs in Okinawa. The study found that the group 1) used their local and family networks to open their izakaya, 2) continued to use these networks after the izakaya opened, 3) created occupational and customer networks by holding events, etc., and 4) maintained their local, family, occupational, and customer networks through their daily activities.

By positioning them as autonomous actors, the study revealed how young people rationally worked toward obtaining employment while using networks as resources and stratifying these networks. The significance of the study lies in its use of empirical evidence, which has been neglected by previous studies, both to illustrate the above points and to highlight the limitations of functionalist explanations.
