Description
Direct underground docking of two shield machines was performed in the Narita sand layer. Since these two shield machines have different required diameters as electric power transmission tunnels, six independent docking hoods, which protrude to overlap to the smaller shield machine, were equipped on the periphery of the larger one. These hoods were also used as retaining walls so as to minimize the chemical grouting area. Stringent coontrol, as well as precise position of the relative location between these two machines, was most critical. However, there were also several other important technical considerations in order to complete the full length slid of the docking hoods as mentioned in this paper.
