Description

One hundred and thirty-one cases of type III tympanoplasty with ossicular reconstruction are presented.
Hearing was analyzed according to the types of reconstruction employed. The procedure was classified as successful when the postoperative hearing level met at least one of these three conditions: 1) hearing level less than 40dB, 2) hearing gain more than 15dB or 3) air-bone gap less than 20dB.
Successful ears in hearing were obtained in 100 (76%) of the patients. It was found that the primary operation for chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma produced good hearing results (89% of the cases). Non-inflammatory, traumatic and anomalous middle ear diseases and 2nd-look operations also showed good hearing gain. On the other hand, in cases of revision operation, the incidence of successful ears in hearing was very low (58% of the cases). There were no significant differences between the types of ossicular reconstruction.
The three requirements for a successful hearing are also discussed.
