Description
The relationship between the configuration of a pure tone audiogram and the prognosis of hearing loss was analyzed in 85 ears of sudden deafness, in which treatment started within two weeks after the onset of hearing loss.
The degree of hearing loss was indicated by the averaged hearing level of five frequencies between 250 Hz and 4 kHz. The audiogram configuration were classified into 8 types.
The results obtained were as follows: 1. The prognosis of a hearing loss was the best in the ears with convex-type audiogram, followed by those with U-shape-type. The prognosis was the worst in the ears in those audiogram showed complete loss.
2. The hearing loss started to recover within a week after introduction of the treatment in more than half of the ears, except in those with total hearing impairment.
3. In the ears with a nearly total hearing loss the recovery process for a hearing loss of 90 dB was divided into two types: rapid recovery and slow recovery.
