The effect of supplemental administration of Saireito (a chinese medicine) on the maintenance of hearing was investigated in 13 cases of a steroid-responsive sensorineural hearing loss. Saireito, 3.0g/day, was administered perorally and it was examined whether the dose of prednisolone might be reduced without any deterioration of hearing.<BR>By the supplemental administration of Saireito, the dose of prednisolone was able to reduce in 10 cases out of 13 (76.9%). In these 10 cases, the mean dose of 3.4mg/day of prednisolone was reduced without any deterioration of hearing levels which were remained stable more than one year.<BR>The precise mechanism of these effects of Saireito on hearing is still not clear. However, the results obtained in this study suggested that Saireito could be useful in order to reduce the dose of prednisolone which is necessary for the maintenance of hearing in steroid-responsive sensorineural hearing loss.
