Abstract

We focus on the fundamental question whether thermodynamics and statistical mechanics can be extended to cover a general class of nonequilibrium steady states. Assuming only basic background in classical mechanics and statistical mechanics, we review the notion of excess heat, the fluctuation theorem, representations of the steady state distribution, and the extended Clausius relation.
