Abstract
Recently, accidental alcohol drinking by children have become problem and it may be at least partly caused by similarity between package design of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Thus, we examined if children can distinguish packages of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and sought preventive strategies of accidental alcohol drinking. In experiment 1, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks were presented to preschoolers and elementary school children, and they were asked to distinguish alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. In experiment 2, the distinctiveness of a pictogram-based alcoholic drink symbol was tested with preschoolers. The results suggested that a pictogram-based alcoholic drink symbol may prevent preschoolers from accidental alcohol drinking. However, further preventive strategies will be needed.
