Abstract

Eileen Gray produced lacquered furniture and interiors by learning from Japanese lacquer artist, Seizo Sugawara. This study attempts to clarify his real educational background by means of visiting his family and referring to documents. He began to study in field at Kawaseya located in Sakata-City Yamagata Prefecture. Kawaseya was both a shop and a factory of furniture, administer by Ukichi Maruyama. Sugawara learned the technique of woodwork and furniture making. One of his Master were Kishu Morikawa. September, 1901, Sugawara was admitted to Tokyo School of Fine Arts, and continued his study of lacquer art over 4 years, but he didn't graduate. His main teachers were Koun Takamura, Iccho Kawanobe, and Shoka Tujimura. Sugawara had thought of himself also a sculptor in life. Gray learned not only Japanese lacquer technique but also the techniques of three-dimensional works from Sugawara.
