Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of color configurations of surrounding and background luminance levels on search for three safety colors, red, orange and yellow. Images of visual stimuli consisted from array of colored circles placed on large visual field (40 deg. of visual angle) were displayed on 80 inch screen. Four types of color configuration were composed corresponding to the relations with the target-distractor similarity and the within-distractor similarity. Reaction times were measured as functions of target color, number of distractor and color configuration. The results showed that search efficiency of orange decreased with increasing the number of distractor on different background luminance levels, whereas red and yellow scarcely decreased. It was suggested that the effects of color configurations depended on increase of target-distractor similarity and were different among three safety colors. Orange was significantly affected more than red and yellow by color configurations. These results imply that orange tends to be influenced by surrounding visual stimuli.
