Description
We designed 17 clinical department pictograms using design principles of pictorial symbols communication support (JIS T 0103), and we administered a questionnaire to evaluate some aspects of pictogram comprehension. The results showed that most pictograms were comprehensible, but some were evaluated as less comprehensible or not comprehensible for several reasons. First, pictograms that had a relatively high error rate were less comprehensible because of the representativeness of the pictogram representation. Second, pictograms, with a high no-response rate were not comprehensible because of the representativeness of the pictogram and the lack of knowledge about clinical departments. Therefore, we suggest that considering both design and cognitive aspects is necessary and important to improve pictogram comprehensibility.
