Description
The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of work environment in which nursing professionals prefer to continue working at the same place of employment. The author conducted semi-structured interviews with six nurses who had experience working in A Group Hospitals as a nursing professional. The questions asked during the interviews included: (a) the reason why they continued or discontinued working at A Group Hospitals; (b) the kind of support and environment they need; and (c) the requirements for nursing professionals to continue their work at the same place of employment. Their answers were analyzed qualitatively. The results indicated that the work environment for nursing professionals to continue their work at the same place of employment can largely be divided into three types: (i) the work environment in which nursing professionals can actualized their professional needs, (ii) the work environment in which nursing professionals need the interpersonal support, and (iii) the work environment in which nursing professionals need atmosphere related with organizational support. The qualitative analysis showed that factors of particular importance include fulfillment and satisfaction, a self-convincing reason to continue their work, good human relationships with colleagues and doctors, a favorable ward atmosphere, work conditions that allow enough time to enjoy their private lives, opportunities for multi-professional interactions, and satisfaction with the business management aspects. These findings suggested the need to improve the work environment if nursing professionals have second thoughts about continuing work, e.g., by decreasing excessive workloads.
