説明

The effect of crystal structure on the electrochemical behaviors of copper-gold alloys having disordered structures and superlattice structures of Cu3Au I, CuAu I, CuAu II, and CuAu3 was investigated by means of a potentiostat and an electron microscope. The electrode reactions were discussed on measurements of anodic and cathodic polarization curves in sodium chloride aqueous solutions.
The selective dissolution of copper-gold alloys has been considered to progress with the preferential dissolution of copper. In the present study, however, it may be concluded that the phenomenon proceeds with complete dissolution of alloy following which gold redeposits on the specimen surface.
The electrochemical measurements showed that ordered alloys were more active than disordered alloys of the same composition, contrary to the concept that alloys with low free energy are chemically more stable. Among the alloys of the same composition having the superlattice structures, the alloy annealed for a long time was found to be chemically more stable than the one annealed for a short time. The result was attributed to that the density of crystal defects such as the boundaries of antiphase domains, twins and grains, which reacted as chemically active areas in corrosive atmosphere, was highest in the ordered alloy annealed for a short time, and lowest in the disordered alloy.
