説明

The breeding population of the stream-breeding frog (Rana sp.), which is closely related to R. tagoi, was studied in the Bonbori River, Itsukaichi-machi, Tokyo, from November 1984 to May 1987. Frogs were captured by hand or nets in the stream. They were measured for body length, and marked by toe-clipping and a waist band for individual identification. Body size of breeding adults ranged approximately from 40 to 50mm in snout-vent length for males, and from 45 to 55mm for females. Females were significantly larger than males, and the ratio in the average body length of females to males was about 1.13. Adults appeared in the stream in November, and thereafter they overwintered under stones. In early spring, when water temperature had risen to 4°C, breeding adults became active. They began to drift down the stream, and males mated with females. The mating pairs spawned under rocks in the water. The breeding activity was positively correlated with water temperature, and lasted 2-3 weeks from mid-February to mid-March. Adults returned to land and disappeared from the stream by early May. Some other characteristics of reproductive ecology are discussed.
