Description

The Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) is a new health index taking the age of premature death and disability into consideration. The DALYs index is utilized for making health policy decisions mainly in developing countries. In this study, we conducted an estimation of DALYs in Japan, by using a simplified method on the basis of existing statistical references. We found that DALYs clarifies the burden of disease quantitatively, which was not detected by mortality, especially for some diseases which caused a certain amount of premature death and disability. We concluded that DALYs can surely play a significant role in health policy making in Japan as well as other countries.
