Description

Indexes were studied on turbidity measured by light scattering and MF-value indicated by filtration velocity. The experiments were run in the cases of some suspended solutions, natural seawater, cultured seawater and seawater mixed with adherent matter on ion-exchange membrane.<BR>The turbidity values showed a little effect on the quality of suspended matter. The sensitivity of MF-value showed high and equivalent to turbidity on compressible suspended matter such as ferric hydroxide or biological matter but low on incompressible suspended matter such as sand or clay. The characteristics of filter of each maker were very different from each other, and it was found necessary to select a suitable kind of membrane filter. Seawater mixed with adherent matter on ion-exchange membrane showed a similar filtration characteristics as ferric hydroxide, and therefore the adherent matter was estimated a compressible one. As the result of the above experiments, MF-value was considered suitable for the control of raw water in making salt by ionexchange membrane.
