Abstract
Maintenance of concrete structures deteriorated by alkali silica reaction (ASR) is one of important problems now, and there is a necessity to create effective measures against it. After Hanshin-Awaji Big Earthquake, various rehabilitation and retrofitting methods have been proposed. However, it is rare that these rehabilitation and retrofitting methods have been actually applied to concrete piers damaged by ASR. The authors turn their attention to “PC confined method” which uses PC wires as a hoop reinforcement. It is experimentally certified that prestressing forces given around concrete piers can confine the development of cracks caused by ASR. This paper describes effectiveness against ASR, design methods and execution of the PC confined method.
