Various laser systems are used for endoscopic treatments, such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy which is now the first choice treatment for the gallstones. In this study we used a pulsed holmium laser (NIIC Inc.) for ablating canine liver, gallbladder, stomach and colon in vivo.<BR>The holmium laser (wavelength 2.08μm, pulse duration 350μs) was delivered by 600μm i. d. silica glass fiber. We could safely perform all of the procedure without hemorrhage. We experienced no hemmorrhage or perforation in the dissection of gallbladder, and less thermal injury was seen in the tissue by microscopic study. We could control precise dissection because this laser produced less thermal necrosis than current endoscopic laser systems.<BR>We recommend the holmium laser for the dissection of gallbladder in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
