Abstract

One of the historical building which usually referred as “Red Brick Building” and was occupied by the Ministry of Justice, was designed by German architects Ende and Böckmann and was built in 1895. During World War II, it was heavily damaged by bombing and was restored later with major design changes. Recently, rebuilding work was carried out which included removal of the roof, replacement of the wooden floors by reinforced concrete floors and strengthening of the building in order to preserve and continue to utilize the present brick construction as the structural framework. Cornice stones and frieze stones etc. were replaced by precast artificial stones in order to restore the external appearance of the building to the state when it was first built. This report describes the results of investigations carried out with respect to the rebuilding work and the restoration of the original appearance using precast artificial stones.
