Description

A new system using high performance membranes has been proposed and investigated in order to control groundwater pollution with respect to chlorinated hydrocarbons (CH). The system is composed of three units. An air blowing unit and a CH decomposition unit are fabricated on the ground surface. A module with a CH permselective membrane is placed in the groundwater zone for extracting CH from water.<BR>In the system, the air from the blowing unit strips CH from water through the membrane, and flows up to the decomposition unit. In this study, we investigated the effect of installation of such a system by a certain numerical simulation. Through the analysis, we obtained rough specifications with regard to membrane performance and the size of the module purifing the water. In a typical example, one module with a CH extraction capacity of 400g/day would be able to purify the groundwater from 20ppm to less than 1ppm for its downstream area of 6m width. For such a case, the module needs 1m2 area membrane with performance of α=10,000 and flux=100g/m2h.
