The radiation effect of He-Ne laser (low power) on the healing of skin defects to corium of guinea pigs as an open wound was studied on granulation tissues in the defect in connection with four items described below. (1) Collagenic hydroxyproline (Hyp) contents, (2) water contents, (3) collagenase activity and (4) histological findings, by comparing each group treated by laser beam at 0-4 days after operation with untreated control group. The results are as follows. (1) The content of Hyp in the open wounds of treated group at the 5th day after operation was significantly higher than that of untreated group. At the 7th and 14th day, tnose were slightly increased in treated group than in untreated group. (2) From the histological findings, at the 3rd and 5th day, edema were reduced in treated group in comparison with control corresponding to decrease of water contents in the time course of the wound healing. At the 14th day, the arrangement of collagen fibers were found to be more regular in treated group than in untreated group. Furthermore, decrease of numbers of fibroblastic cell and capillary vessel were observed on treated group at the same day.
