Description

The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of the appearance of N400 component in ERPs during an SOV paradigm. Subjects were 10 Japanese students. Japanese sentences of historical events (for example, Columbus/discovered/the America.) were presented visually with the order of subject (S), object (O), and verb (V), which is normal in the Japanese grammar. A task was to read a sentence and to judge the statement as true or false by pressing one of two buttons as rapidly as possible. O-word semantically mismatched with the S elicited the N400, which was larger in amplitude at right (C4) than at left (C3) recording site. In addition, it was suggested that the SOV paradigm was usefull to get the N400 without such contamination as a resolution of the CNV or decision-related potentials appeared after the final V presentation.
